Then it finished, and _Aquarius_ by Aqua started. Halfway through "Around the World", I got sick of Aqua and decided to turn on something else. With the words "Around the World" fresh in my mind, my thoughts immediately turned to the first song on the album _Californication_ by Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is also called "Around The World". After I put it in the CD player, I stepped over my BNS Ultra DX-Xtreme foam dance pad to go to my computer, and my legs began to improvise. I realized that "Around the World" by RHCP would be an excellent song for me to enter into Tournamix 4. I checked bemanisims.com and Google to see if somebody else had DWI'd "Around the World", and nobody had done the one by Aqua or the one by RHCP, only the one by ATC, which is _completely_ different from both of them. Then I went to work. The wav file that CDex pulled out of my CD was overdriven to heck, obviously mastered for radio play rather than for home listening or dancing. I fixed it with Cool Edit Pro 2's clip restoration filter set at -4 dB attenuation and 2% overhead. Cutting involved removing the intro, 2nd verse and chorus, half of the 3rd chorus, and most of the coda. I encoded the wav file with oggdropXPd V1.6.11e, and everything was just fine. You too can own a copy of the album _Californication_: http://half.ebay.com/cat/buy/prod.cgi?cpid=1903022&domain_id=1876&meta_id=2 THE BACKGROUND * A shot of the Earth, provided by NASA. (Also used as the banner.) * A reproduction of the RHCP asterisk logo, drawn by me. * Stills from the music video. * Some of the music video itself. (You'll need the DivX 5 codec to see this.) * Globes from http://www4.ncsu.edu:8030/~pdbaylie/micros~1.htm . * A still from the movie "Life Is Beautiful". Blame Disney. * The album cover. Animation and sequencing by Damian Yerrick. THE STEPS Composed with recent StepMania snapshots and tested with DWI 2.40.0. Because this song is about half as fast as the songs you may be used to *cough*PARANOiA*cough*, you may want to play them on 2x. Double steps are not included because I only own one pad. Live drums are harder to synchronize than the synthesized rhythm of most techno songs. Rather than doing "yellow arrow syndrome", that is, compensating for bad BPM with off-beat steps, I inserted a subtle BPM change every 8 beats. THE JOURNEY 2003-04-23 Chose song. Cut song down to 2:01. Ran song choice past NMR. Encoded song as .ogg. Laid down tempo track in StepMania. Read that NMR had approved the song. Made heavy steps. 2003-04-24 Made banner and background stills. Transcribed the lyrics from my CD's liner notes. Found a copy of the music video. Picked 2 parts from the music video and encoded them using VirtualDub. Tweaked the heavy steps a bit. Made standard and light steps. Tested the steps in DWI. Fine-tuned the crap out of the BPM changes in DWI. Wrote a DWI animation script reproducing the BG changes I had assembled in StepMania. Added moving globes (which I unfortunately couldn't get to spin) over the stills during the chorus. 2003-04-25 Played the heck out of it in DWI. 2003-05-02 Sent my registration to Sivus by e-mail. 2003-05-05 No response. PM'd Sivus, who responded that he no longer checks the address at hotmail.com. 2003-05-08 Re-sent registration to Sivus. Got response. 2003-05-09 Confirmed that my name was on the list. Sent file to Sivus. 2003-05-10 Read that Sivus had received the file.
